Developing the Next Generation of Officials: Basketball Training at Pine Island

On a brisk Saturday, February 7th, 2026, the gym at Pine Island High School buzzed with a different kind of intensity. It wasn't the sound of squeaking sneakers or cheering fans, but rather the focused hum of learning, as a group of eager high school athletes gathered to delve into the intricate world of basketball officiating.
The training session was spearheaded by a trio of veteran officials from the Rochester Area Officials Association (RAOA): Jim Fall, Jess Krawlinski, and MJ Wagenson. With years of experience calling games under their belts, they brought a wealth of knowledge and practical insights to the aspiring referees.
The young athletes, many of whom have likely experienced the game from the player's perspective, gained invaluable insight into the rules, mechanics, and psychology of officiating. Learning to see the game through an official's eyes is a unique challenge, demanding quick decision-making, clear communication, and an unwavering commitment to fairness.
This program not only helps these students develop a deeper understanding of basketball but also equips them with valuable life skills like leadership, conflict resolution, and composure under pressure.
A huge shout-out is due to Pine Island High School for graciously hosting this important training event! Providing their facilities for such an initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to fostering sportsmanship and developing well-rounded individuals within their community.
Here's to the next generation of basketball officials!
