COVID-19 Updates

Posted 3/21/2020

Baseball Umpires-

Directives from the Governor relating to school closures and distance learning are continuing to affect competition limits.

The MSHSL continues to discuss and plan with the knowledge that many unknowns exist.  At this time, all competitions are postponed until April 6th.

As the COVID-19 situation becomes more restrictive, we are waiting to build detailed contingency plans or alternative sites/dates for competitions.  The League continues to follow the guidance of Governor Walz, the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in developing plans.  We will continue to provide information and direction as this situation evolves.

The deadline for completing the online meetings and the exam has been extended to April 8th.  If additional adjustments are made, we will communicate that with all umpires.

Many umpires were prevented from attending an in-person clinic due to the cancellation of the Waseca and Ada-Borup clinics.  To accommodate all umpires and to provide consistent application, we will grant three-year clinic credit to all umpires in the 2019-20 school year.  This will show as attended on 7/1/2019.  In future years, please plan to attend a clinic that is near you as this three-year credit may expire prior to a clinic coming back to a site near you.

All of you should have received a Minnesota Baseball Mechanics Illustrated.  Please e-mail officials@mshsl.org with questions or if pages seem to be out of order.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time.

Due to the ongoing health situation and looking at MSHSL activity as well as directives state wide from multiple agencies, the meetings scheduled for this Sunday (3/15) and Monday (3/16) will be postponed.

With the MSHSL extension for online meeting and exam deadlines being extended, we will follow suit and postpone our meetings two weeks. We plan to do an online/virtual format yet to be determined.  Please stay tuned for updates from MSHSL and RAOA.

At this time we are working with schools to enter schedules.  Due to uncertainty as to the season and in what format games will be played, we will hold off on assigning umpires at this time.

Please continue to update your calendars and be prepared for an intense brief HS season when and if the health risk passes and teams are cleared to compete.   Please direct (important only please) questions to RAOA leadership and avoid reaching out to MSHSL at this time as they are very overloaded.

Tentative New Meeting Dates and Times (online/virtual format):

Sunday 3/29 - New Umpires and Mentors 6pm-8pm

Monday 3/30 - ALL Umpires

Softball:  5:30pm start

Baseball:  7pm start

Note from MSHSL: Deadlines for exams and online meetings will be extended by two weeks to accommodate officials at varying points in the eligibility process.  Officials will not be used for scrimmages or games until April 6, 2020.  It is possible that spring sports may be limited further beyond this date.  Discussions will be on-going regarding this topic.
